The Community Ministries Department seeks to help members put Christian love into action in their local communities. The department follows the example of Jesus' ministry by recognising the importance of meeting people's practical and material needs, before addressing their spiritual needs. Many local churches are actively involved with community projects. Each church may have its own unique ministry, in keeping with local needs within its neighbourhood.

The Community Ministries vision is to: Serve Him and Touch Lives

Our strategy is named the 'Jesus Approach';

  1. Jesus mingled with the people.
  2. He sympathised with them.
  3. He met their needs.
  4. He won their confidence.
  5. He then bade them, 'Follow Me'.

Our department is concerned with;

  • Identifying the social needs of the local community
  • Supporting local communities through projects
  • Assisting in times of crisis and working towards long term solutions
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with community leaders which provide effective channels for mutual growth and action
  • Facilitating the right and ability of children to attain their full potential
  • Promoting and expanding the involvement of youth in community action
  • Reflecting the character of Jesus through all activities

Our two main objectives for 2009 are;

To establish at least one sustainable project in each area.
and
To launch the Food Action Project (FAP)

Elsie

Why did you decide to start working for the church?
I feel I was called by God to work for the Church. I was originally working towards a secular career and was gaining talents I knew I could use for God. After this realisation, I started work for the SEC, working in both the Health and Community Ministries departments.

What would you say are the challenges of your job?
I think that communication is a challenge of my role. As I'm based at the Advent Centre, it is difficult to keep up to date with everything that is emerging at the SEC.

What are the highlights of your time as director of this Department?
I love sharing and helping to educate people, especially about the marvellous things that God has given us. We all have the same needs, it's just that some needs are more prominent at different times, and hopefully my ministry will care for people in many different ways.
