As the current Coordinator of Child Protection, Nathan Stickland handles general enquiries about Child Protection both within individual churches and across the South England as a whole. Within each church in the South England Conference, there is a Child Safety Representative and it is to these you can make enquiries about your local training programs. Along with these Representatives, Paul Lockham (who serves as the CRB Disclosure manager), and Vivienne Evers (the CRB Processor), Pastor Stickland strives to reach out across our churches and ensure the safety of our children.
As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe that children, youth and adults should live without fear of abuse when attending church activities. The unfortunate experience of many is that many forms of abuse and harassment have taken place in the past and gone unreported or not acted upon when disclosed. Our aim is that by extending the best child protection practice throughout our churches, we will do all we can to minimise the risk of any abuse taking place in our church contexts.
Several abbreviations that appear frequently in our work for this department, are as following:
KCFS (Keeping our Church Family Safe) is the name of the British Union Conference Child Protection policy. It calls for our church members who work with under 18 year olds to be trained in Child Protection procedures as well as to apply for a CRB disclosure.
CSR is a Child Safety Representative appointed in each of our churches to administrate the CRB disclosure application service and to organise Child Protection training. At a local church level we invite you to talk to this person to obtain more information, training and a CRB disclosure.
CRB is the Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Service who have established a system for ensuring that all those who work with children and youth can be checked to see if they have a police record. Checks are requested with the consent of the children/youth worker.
How do I get a CRB check?
Talk to your local church Child Safety Representative. They will explain about the online application process as well as the traditional paper application process for those who do not have access to the internet.
